Meet our Rabbi -- David S. Bauman
Rabbi David S. Bauman became the spiritual leader of Temple Israel of Long Beach, NY on July 1, 2010. Prior to assuming the pulpit of Temple Israel he served as Rabbi of Kehilat Israel Synagogue in Overland Park, Kansas and as the Assistant Rabbi of Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue in Toronto, Ontario.
Rabbi Bauman received Yoreh-Yoreh Semikah (rabbinic ordination) from the world renowned Talmudic Scholar, Rabbi David Weiss-Halivni, PhD. Rabbi Bauman holds two Masters Degrees, one in Jewish Studies from The Jewish Theological Seminary and a Masters degree in Education Administration and Counseling Psychology from New York University. His undergraduate work was completed at The American University in Washington, DC, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Education, and Jewish Studies. Rabbi Bauman is currently pursuing a Doctor of Jewish Studies degree in Medieval Jewish Philosophy at Spertus College's Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago.
Rabbi Bauman taught Mishnah, Talmud, and Halacha at United Synagogue Day School for three years and lectured in Jewish Ethics for the Melton Mini-School. He is the creator and director of the M'Choschek L'Ohr Jewish Teen Heritage Bus Tours and served as an active member of the Toronto Board of Rabbis, the Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City, and United Jewish Communities - Federation. He has also been appointed as Chaplain to the Long Beach Police Department. In addition to his rabbinic activities, Rabbi Bauman serves as the Executive Director of the Union of Traditional Judaism. The Rabbi frequently authors articles on a variety of Jewish topics and D'veri Torah for the Canadian Jewish News and Mekor Hayyim.
Rabbi Bauman and his wife Elly (an accomplished Jewish educator in her own right), are blessed with two children, Matan and Ori; and their dog Hadas Pugman. The Bauman's are extremely warm and approachable and they are very pleased to have become part of our Long Beach "Mishpacha". They look forward to meeting and getting to know all members of the Temple Israel family as well as the entire Long Beach and South Shore Community.
