SYNAGOGUE/COMMUNITY EVENTS:

1.      A Women’s Dessert Seder – Please join our Temple Israel Sisterhood in conjunction with the Sisterhoods of Congregation Beth Sholom and Temple Emanu-El, Hadassah and J.W.I. for a wonderful dessert seder on Thursday, March 11th at 7:30pm at Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach (455 Neptune).  Cost is $5 per person and children under 13 are free.  Both men and women are welcome to attend.  RSVP’s are past due.  For more information, please see the flier at www.templeisraeloflb.org/fliers/dessertseder.pdf.

2.      Sisterhood Book Discussion – The next sisterhood book discussion will be on Wednesday evening, April 28th at 7:30pm, at the home of Malky Asarch, 19 East Beech Street, Long Beach.  The book to be discussed will be “Those Who Save Us”, by Jenna Blum.

3.      Save the Dates – This year’s Sisterhood Spring Torah Luncheon has been scheduled for Sunday, May 16, 2010.  The Sisterhood will be honoring Pamela Garfinkle and Robin Garfinkle Mahler for their hard work and dedication to the Sisterhood.  Also, Our Annual Dinner Dance has been scheduled for Sunday, May 23, 2010.  Our honorees this year will be Susan and Bruce Peckman.

4.      A special invitation to Holocaust survivors:  The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County invites you and your family to a special Grand Opening event at noon on Sunday, April 18, 2010.  RSVP by April 4th is required.  For more information, call (516) 571-8040, ext. 108.  Please see the flier at www.templeisraeloflb.org/fliers/holocaust.pdf.

RECURRING EVENTS:

1.      Men’s Club Dinner Meeting: There is a Men’s Club meeting on the first Wednesday of every month, unless otherwise noted.  Dinner is served at 7:00 PM and the meeting begins at 7:30 PM.  All are welcome.  The next meeting is April 7, 2010.

2.      Join us for a short service, a light meal, and some lively conversation every Shabbat afternoon for Mincha, Seudah Shelishith, and Ma’ariv.  See “Synagogue Events” for exact time each week.

3.      Talmud class Sunday mornings at 7:45 AM.  We are currently studying Tractate Megillah.

4.      Jewish Literature Course Classes are held at 7:30 PM on Tuesdays.  Our current subject is “Jewish Literature, from Torah to Today,” which will include an overview of Jewish literature, including each book of the Bible, different forms of Rabbinic literature, later commentaries, philosophy, and works of history. 

5.      Shabbat Parsha Study: Rabbi Gradofsky’s Shabbat Parsha Study is held each Shabbat during Daylight Saving Time one hour prior to Mincha.   See “TILB Events” above for exact time each week.  *Please note that this class will go on hiatus until the return of Daylight Saving Time.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES (ACTS OF CHARITY AND KINDNESS):

1.      Volunteers needed: Looking for ways to volunteer? Contact FEGS “Partners in Caring” South Shore Liaison, Rachel Bruckenstein at (516) 766-4341 x 131.    Volunteer opportunities include “Adopt a Family,” food pantries, visiting the homebound, assisting families coping with serious or terminal illness, and more.  Time commitments are flexible and will be agreed upon between volunteer and FEGS Volunteer Coordinator.

NOTICES:

1.       Yizkor Book of Remembrance - Once again, the Men’s Club will be publishing a Yizkor Book of Remembrance to be used in conjunction with the Yizkor Memorial Services on Passover, Shavout, Yom Kippur and Shemini Atzeret.  The book will contain the names of family and friends you wish to memorialize, your name as donor and the appropriate yizkor prayers.  The cost per name is $10.  Forms are available on line at www.templeisraeloflb.org/fliers/yizkor.pdf.  Forms must be returned no later than March 22, 2010.

2.       Connect to the care you need: In this recession, many of us find ourselves in need of support — even those of us who have never had the need to access assistance.  The UJA-Federation’s “Connect to Care” program is there to help people connect to the services they need.  For more information, please contact Partners in Caring Liaison, Rachel Bruckenstein, LCSW at 516-766-4341 ext. 131.

3.       The Sisterhood Cookbook is available.  Cookbooks are $18 and available for purchase in the temple office. For more information, contact Pam Garfinkle or Robin Mahler or e-mail .

4.       The Sisterhood Boutique located in the upper lobby is available for all your Judaic and non-Judaic needs.  Beautiful and unique gift items for all occasions.  Flexible hours to suit your schedule.  Contact Debbie Gordon, Marci Ross, or Ellen Klein through the synagogue office or e-mail .

5.       Something to celebrate or commemorate?  Sponsorships available: Seudah Shelishith $50, “Costco Kiddush” starting at $100 or Kiddush luncheon starting at approximately $10 per person.  Please note: Seudah Shelishith must be paid for in cash (tax receipt available upon request).

7.       Sisterhood Collection: The Sisterhood is collecting used eyeglasses, cell phones, and used ink cartridges.   Please drop your donations off in the box near the Hebrew School office.  The Sisterhood has already collected funds for used cartridges.  Thank you and please keep it up!

8.       Donate to the Sisterhood:  We are assembling a new Golden Book.  Pages are $50.  Donation cards can still be purchased for $5 each or 6 for $25.  Contact the office or .

9.       Refuah Sheleimah: Temple Israel extends get well wishes to Al Eagle, Helene Gerber, Nathaniel Glasgold, Lester Peysner, Rachel Scharman, Jerry Sklover, Nathan Sobel, Dr. Hal Waldman, Myron Weinstein and Ellen Weiss.  If you or someone you know is ill, please fill out the Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick) form in the synagogue office, or call us with the information.
